In 2007, I was still working as a Middle School Principal in Vermont, completing my 35th year as an educator. I absolutely loved my work and felt that the intensity of my job might cause me to burn out much sooner than I wished. I needed more balance in my life now that our children are grown and out of the home.

I am a foodie at heart, and had a granola recipe I had developed over the years and shared with friends and family, and thought, "Why don't we start a little home hobby making granola and selling it at our local Farmers' Market!" My husband, a teacher, immediately said, "NO!" but I also knew he would support this endeavor if I wished to proceed. We did, and were ultimately accepted into our juried Market.

The only flavor we had began to sell and it surprised me and energized me to do more. We listed to feedback from customers over the 13 years we have now been in business. I retired from my job as an educator after 44 years, and we have been running this business since the beginning.

We think of ourselves now as Entrepreneurs, and if I write the book I'm hoping to write, it will be called, 'From Educators to Entrepreneurs!' This business is no longer 'at home' or 'a hobby' and we have learned much over the past 13 years about how to run a successful business.
